Hire more staff?
Each decision requires comparing the expected ROI against the company's hurdle rate (minimum acceptable return) and the ROI of alternative uses of that capital.
Marketing and sales teams use ROI to justify budgets and optimize campaigns—if a $10,000 ad campaign generates $30,000 in profit, that's a 200% ROI and a clear win.
Real estate investors calculate ROI including both cash flow and appreciation, often achieving 15-30% annual returns on rental properties through leverage.
The key to using ROI effectively is consistency—define your calculation method and apply it uniformly across all investment options you're comparing.
