Net Worth Percentile

Your net worth rank using 2022 Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances percentiles, showing what share of your age group has less wealth.

Also known as: wealth percentile, net worth ranking, wealth bracket

What You Need to Know

Your net worth percentile tells you where you rank financially compared to others. If you're in the 75th percentile, you have more wealth than 75% of people in your comparison group (age, location, etc.).

How It's Calculated: Net Worth = Assets

  • Liabilities Then ranked against Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) data, updated every 3 years.

  • 50th percentile (median): $39,000
  • 75th percentile: $184,000
  • 90th percentile: $457,000

What Percentiles Mean:

Below 25th: Focus on eliminating debt, building emergency fund, and starting retirement contributions.

25th-50th: You're building wealth but behind median. Increase savings rate, maximize 401(k) match, avoid lifestyle inflation.

50th-75th: Above average! Focus on tax optimization, maxing retirement accounts, and investment diversification.

75th-90th: Top quarter. Consider tax-advantaged strategies, real estate, and legacy planning.

90th+: Top 10%. Work with financial advisors on estate planning, tax minimization, and wealth preservation.

Important Notes:

  • Net worth includes home equity, retirement accounts, investments, cash
  • Negative net worth is common in 20s/30s due to student loans
  • Percentile matters less than trajectory (are you improving?)
  • Geographic differences: $500k net worth is 75th percentile nationally but 50th in San Francisco

Use This Data To:

  • Set realistic goals for your age
  • Benchmark progress
  • Understand if you're on track for retirement
  • Avoid comparison anxiety (focus on your journey)
